Jalen Hurts delivers. Eagles win 24-21 vs Saints

The Jalen Hurts led Philadelphia Eagles ended the New Orleans Saints nine-game win streak, knocking them out of the 1st seed of the NFC playoff standings . The Eagles won 24-21. Making his first NFL start, Hurts was 17 of 30 for 167 yards and a passing TD to help the Eagles snap a four game losing streak.
The Saints entered the game with the number two rushing defense (76.1 yards per game) in the NFL. They were currently on a 55-game streak without allowing a 100-yard rusher. The Eagles put an end to that by halftime. Miles Sanders had 96 of his is 115 yards rushing at half in addition to Jalen Hurts with 75 of his 106 yards in the first half.
Hurts and Sanders became the first quarterback/running back combination to each run for 100 yards in the same game since Donovan McNabb and Duce Staley in 2002. Doug Pederson moved to 11-2 without Carson Wentz behind center.
The Eagles lost pretty much their entire secondary, with Slay (head), McLeod (knee) and Maddox (knee) all injured late in the game. The Saints were able to take advantage of a fresh secondary with a 37-yard pass from Hill to Sanders to make the game close but the Eagles held on to win after recovering an onside kick and forcing a late fumble to seal the victory.
Hurts was confident and remained poised throughout the game. The running game was terrific. The play calling was the best it has been all season. The Eagles were all over Taysom Hill and the Saints, sacking him five times. Hurts on the other hand, was not sacked once for the Eagles.
Washington, Dallas, and Philadelphia all won today in the NFC East. Dallas was the only team who lost. The Eagles sit at 4-8-1 and remain alive in the playoff hunt. Washington sits atop of the NFC East at 6-7. Buckle up Eagles fans, there’s no doubt that the Eagles will rely on Jalen Hurts to backdoor themselves into the playoffs. What happens after that? We’ll save that conversation for later.
Other Notes:
- Jake Elliot stinks.
- Twitter spent the majority of the game playing “I told you so” with people who previously stated Carson Wentz is a good quarterback.
- Although it was a light-hearted blog post, we finally have answers on “The Plot Against Carson Wentz“.
Next Up: The Eagles will visit the 7-6 Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
