Eagles officially release Alshon Jeffery

The Eagles continue their new league year moves with the announcement that they are officially releasing veteran wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. Alshon has been with the Eagles for the last four seasons and was pivotal to their 2017 Super Bowl run. Over the last few seasons, Jeffery’s play has declined with age and increasing injuries.
Alshon in four years with Philadelphia:
- 2,237 yards receiving
- 20 touchdowns
- 171 receptions
Alshon joined the Eagles in free agency back in 2017 on a one-year contract from the Chicago Bears. Following the Super Bowl, the Eagles gave Jeffery a massive four-year $52 million extension that has since been modified to benefit the Eagles salary cap. Jeffery has been expected to be cut alongside Malik Jackson and Desean Jackson, who was released a few weeks ago.
The move won’t clear up much space, roughly a bit over $2 million, $4 million between him and Malik Jackson but it was time for the two to part ways. Moving on from Jeffery and Jackson allows the younger wideouts to get more exposure and develop better under new quarterback Jalen Hurts. The 31-year-old will likely have a large market in free agency.
Ever since his Lisfranc injury towards the end of the 2019 season, Jeffery has never been the same and hopefully can benefit from a change of scenery. More moves will likely be on the way soon, such as Zach Ertz with the Eagles working on opening up salary cap space.
