76ers assistant Sam Cassell to interview for Wizards’ head coach vacancy

Sam Cassell could have coached his last game with the Philadelphia 76ers. According to The Athletic, the 76ers assistant interviewed for the Wizards’ head coach vacancy the other day. Cassell was already reported to be a potential candidate in Washington a few days ago and was one of the first to interview. Other candidates include Dallas Mavericks assistant Jamahl Mosley and Celtics assistant Scott Morrisson.
Cassell has been a widely rumored candidate for a head coaching position for the last several years. Washington was Sam’s first coaching gig, having been an assistant there from 2009 through 2014. This past season he joined Doc Rivers in Philadelphia and was a crucial piece in the 76ers’ dominant defense and the continued rise of Matisse Thybulle.
There will likely be no decision one way or another for some time with the Wizards conducting a lengthy search. Their former head coach was Scott Brooks, who was hired back in 2016 and let go following their loss to the 76ers in the first round. If hired, Sam Cassell wouldn’t be the first former 76ers assistant to become a head coach this offseason, with Ime Udoka having been hired by the Celtics a few days ago.
