Report: Eagles TE Zach Ertz expected to report to training camp

We are now just three weeks out from training camp and tight end Zach Ertz remains on the Eagles roster. The standoff between the Eagles and the 3-time Pro Bowler has been an extensive one โ€” Ertz has been frustrated for some time now while Howie Roseman believes that the tight end is still in his prime and should net adequate value.

Itโ€™s been reported that the team has been seeking either a 3rd or 4th-round pick for Ertzโ€™s services, but after his lackluster 2020 season, itโ€™s unlikely that the Eagles will receive much compensation.

Per Eagles Insider Dave Spadaro via Sirius XM, the idea of Zach returning to the team in 2021 may not be as far-fetched as we believe:

“When players report to training camp on July 27th, my sense is Zach Ertz will be one of those players reporting. After that, we’ll see how it plays out.”

Multiple teams have checked in on Ertz throughout the offseason, with Buffalo making the most headway. Bills TE Dawson Knox recently spoke about the possibility of playing with Ertz should he end up in Buffalo:

“No matter who they bring in, whether it’s a rookie or All-Pro like Zach, I think it’ll be great just to elevate the competition. Iron sharpens iron and that’s a big philosophy that I have. It’s great having [Hollister] here, too, and we’re learning things from each other. We’re competing, but also building some good team chemistry to use multiple tight end sets and stuff like that. It’s really not what can I do to be better than the guy next to me. It’s what can I do to make myself the best player I can.”

The Eagles are reportedly working on a big-money extension for Dallas Goedert and re-signed Richard Rodgers earlier this offseason. Hence, the team is prepared to be without Ertz moving forward. However, as far as training camp is concerned, it looks as though the veteran will at least show up as he waits for his future to become a bit more clearer.

Ertz played in just 11 games last season catching 36 passes for 335 yards and a single touchdown and carries with him an $8.5M price tag in 2021.
