JT Realmuto, Zack Wheeler play well in limited time at the Midsummer Classic

JT Realmuto and Zack Wheeler joined the rest of the American and National League All-Stars last night for the Midsummer Classic in Denver. Realmuto started behind the plate for the National League. The Best Catcher in Baseball didn’t disappoint, going 1-for-2 from the plate with a home run and a strikeout. He was the first Phillies player to hit a home run in the All-Star game since Mike Schmidt in 1981. For the game, the American League beat the National League by a score of 5-2.
JT Realmuto All-Star Home Run
Zack Wheeler didn’t get much action in his first All-Star appearance, only facing one batter in the top on the ninth inning. Wheeler threw two 100 mph fastballs for strikes before getting Matt Olson to miss on a slider. On one hand, it was pretty insulting to have Wheeler only throw against one batter during the All-Star game that he easily could have been starting, but on the other, who really cares if he’s pitching in this game. Let Wheeler get a little taste of the All-Star game, and then it’s time to get back to work in Philly.
Great performances by both Phillies players at the All-Star game. As for the Phillies, they are currently .500 and 3.5 games behind the New York Mets, who sit in first place in the National League East. Starting Friday, it’s time to go on a run before the trade deadline, and see what this team has heading into August and September.
