Phillies win twice, pull within 2 games of the NL East leading New York Mets

After yesterday’s blown save and weather suspension as they headed to extra innings, the Phillies had an opportunity to win two games today against the Marlins. Game one started out in extra innings with Jose Alvarado on the mound. Alvarado pitched a scoreless top of the 10th inning for the Phillies and Travis Jankowski started the bottom frame on second base. Segura advanced Jankowski to third base on a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. From there, JT Realmuto ended the game with a walk-off two-run home run to give the Phillies a win.
The Phillies were now one game above .500 yet again, with Zack Wheeler on the mound in the series finale, which started 30 minutes after the first game concluded. Wheeler certainly did not have his best stuff today, but he was efficient. He threw six innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs. He walked two and struck out seven while ultimately earning the win.
The Phillies fell behind in the third inning after the Marlins scored four runs to put themselves up 4-2 in the game. In the top of the 5th inning, the Phillies tied the game thanks to two solo home runs from Andrew McCutchen and Didi Gregorius.
Connor Brogdon, Bailey Falter, and Hector Neris pitched scoreless innings in relief and the Phillies got three more runs courtesy of a Jean Segura sac fly, an Andrew McCutchen fielders choice, and an RBI single from JT Realmuto. The Best Catcher in Baseball was 3-for-5 on the day with two RBI. The Phillies hottest player is clearly Travis Jankowski, who was 2-for-2 on the day. Over his last 15 games, Jank is slashing .355/.444/.419 with 11 hits, eight runs scored, and four RBI.
The Phillies move to 47-45 on the season. They are now just two games behind the NL East leading New York Mets, who came back from a six run deficit to the Pittsburgh Pirates this afternoon.
The Phillies will have Monday off before heading to New York for a two game series against the Yankees. Aaron Nola is expected to make his first start in two weeks on Sunday night. The race for the National League East is on and the Phillies are putting pressure on the Mets. Finally, we have something to be excited about this summer when it comes to Phillies baseball.
Ring it.
