Looking back at the Double Doink 3 years later

Rejoice, Philadelphia! The third anniversary of the Double Doink is upon us. The dramatic, near-comical ending to the Eagles’ road Wild Card matchup against the Chicago Bears on Jan. 6, 2019, has stuck in the memories of football fans across the country.
Along with national infamy, the play holds a special place in the collective memory of Eagles fans. The missed kick sent the Birds to the Divisional round to face the Saints and capped off another win for God-loving Nick Foles.
Behold, The Double Doink:
HAHAHAHAH – oh, you’re done laughing? Moving on.
Sorry, I had to get that out of my system. Man, oh man, it’s genuinely one of the funniest plays I’ve ever seen in my life.
Every detail truly creates a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Cody Parkey hitting the uprights twice with one kick is even funnier because he used to play for the Eagles. For me, it’s triple funny because I have his jersey (don’t ask).
Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth are incredible on the call. Michaels saying, “He hit the upright again!… That’s impossible!” is hilarious because, well, it is very clearly possible.
Plus, while Eagles fans love to hate him, Collinsworth deserves all the credit in the world for the classic line, “The Bears’ season is going to end on a Double Doink!” To me, his total bewilderment at 99% of the things happening in this clip is a point of endearment.
Of course, the comedy doesn’t stop! The Double Doink capped off a season where Cody Parkey previously hit the upright four times. It also showed the Bears had no solution for a kicking problem that plagued them since 2016.
Needless to say, I can understand where Matt Nagy is coming from here after the Double Doink:

I made that same face when I found out I had my cooking show idea stolen.
The final piece of humor to find in this is that, while Eagles fans remember it as a funny moment in the team’s recent history, the incident serves as an example of peak ineptitude for Bears’ fans. To us, it was just a moment in history.
To them, it was just the beginning.

[…] The Double Doink wasn’t just a funny footballing blooper that directed laughs at Chicago. It didn’t just give us a Titanic ending to a pretty intense game. It encapsulated this miraculous ora that just seemed to follow Nick Foles to every stadium he played at as a Philadelphia Eagle. The only way the Eagles were going to win that game from that spot was through a miracle from the football gods. They were watching that day. […]
