Andy Reid dropped legendary quote to Patrick Mahomes during 4th quarter comeback
Former Eagles coach and Super Bowl Champion Andy Reid has given football fans a number of classic quotes over the years. However, they usually have to do with cheeseburgers or Kansas City BBQ.
While Reid loves food, he loves winning football games even more (don’t cite me on that, though). In the fourth quarter of the Chiefs’ back and forth Divisional Round matchup against the Buffalo Bills, quarterback Patrick Mahomes turned in an epic performance to secure the win.
A reporter asked Big Red what advice he gave to Patrick Mahomes, who had just over 10 seconds to drive into field goal range to send the game to OT.
In response, Reid dropped an instant classic:
“When it’s grim, be the Grim Reaper and go get it.”Andy Reid to Patrick Mahomes
Damn, talk about one of the hardest lines of all time.
Cheeseburger Andy is already cemented as an Eagles and Chiefs legend for his offensive genius and coaching prowess, but the man has always had a way with words. I didn’t know the oft-jovial Reid had bars like that, though.
That reads more like a quote on a black screen to open a Vietnam War movie than something said on a football sideline, but maybe that Venn diagram has more overlap than I initially thought.
Sure, NFL overtime rules are total crap, and the Bills calling heads gave KC the ball to start OT, which they promptly finished with a Travis Kelce TD, but the Chiefs won on Patty’s back regardless. He certainly became the Grim Reaper, per Dr. Andy Burgerman’s request.
Regardless of what I think, Reid, Mahomes, and the Chiefs are headed to their fourth straight AFC Championship game, all of which they’ve hosted. There’s clearly more to team success than cheeseburgers, and conjuring motivational speeches is definitely one of the facets.
At the same time, however, maybe the cheeseburgers are the source? I know he used to bet Eagles players cheeseburgers during practice, maybe that’s what’s up in KC.
Food for thought, I guess.
