Sorry (not really) but Claude Giroux should have been traded years ago

Known poverty franchise, the Philadelphia Flyers, are in the midst of yet another disastrous NHL season. With the NHL trade deadline quickly approaching, Claude Giroux is one name that is expected to be on the move. Giroux held a press conference today to discuss…..absolutely nothing?
Once the presser was announced, Flyers fan boys went into full panic mode, throwing up all types of junk on social media basically crying before the entire pointless presser even started. All I saw on Twitter today was things along the lines of “Oh no! Not Claude Giroux!! Anyone but Claude!! Oh Captain, My Captain!!
Give me a fucking break will ya?
First of all, I can’t wait to get rid of the Walt Whitman / Dead Poets Society “Oh Captain!!” bullshit. That movie is soft and has no place in hockey.
From there, what in the world are we even talking about people?
Here’s what Giroux said addressing the question about waiving his no movement clause.
Let me recap that for those at work: He said nothing. Absolutely nothing.
I would have to imagine this is what Giroux wanted to say…
“Here’s the thing, we stink. We stink real bad and we’re clearly not winning anything this year. Something needs to change and if the Flyers trade me before the deadline I’ll see who they want to trade me to and if they don’t stink, I’ll go there.”
That’s all he’s saying here and honestly, the Flyers should have moved on from Claude Giroux years ago.
Go get a box of tissues, cover your eyes, exit out of this article, whatever you have to do but if we’re being real, Claude Giroux hasn’t been the guy to get a cup for the Flyers in Philadelphia. I love Giroux just like everyone else (not as much) but he simply hasn’t gotten it done just like every other Flyers team for the last four decades.
Giroux loves Philly. Philly loves Giroux. Blah blah blah. We need a Stanley Cup, god damnit, and it’s not happening the way this team is currently constructed. Unfortunately the NHL doesn’t hand them out based on if your captain is loved or not or else we would have multiple cups over the last 10 years.
I can already see the eye rolls from here.
Claude Giroux is #2 in franchise history for points, assists and games played.
That’s cool and all, but when you’ve played with a team for 14+ seasons and you’ve been a starter almost the entire time, you damn well be leading the team in all major categories, captain.
But the problem is, all of those stats are empty without a cup. Claude Giroux is nothing more than, and this one is really going to sting, the hockey version of Russell Westbrook. The regular season looks great and Giroux puts up these numbers all over the score sheet but in the end, he can’t do it when it matters most for his team.
Come playoff time, Grioux disappears year in and year out. Since 2014 Giroux has played in 35 playoff games, 4 goals, 14 assists, a -9 +/- and the Flyers went 18-17.
Not good enough. You need a guy that can get you a goal and/or make a play in the clutch.
In his 85 career playoff games, 2 game winning goals. Not good enough. During the 2018 playoffs the Flyers faced the Penguins, in a 6 game series they lose 4-2 and needed their ‘captain’ to step up, he shits the bed. Giroux put up 1 goal, 2 assists and is a -10 in that series. Meanwhile the guy we hate and pretend we’d never want, Sidney Crosby had 6 goals, 7 assists and was a +7.
Not. Good. Enough.
The Flyers’ mistake with Claude wasn’t that they didn’t provide him enough help, it was that they didn’t pull the band-aid off 5+ years ago. When Giroux does get traded, it’ll be sad. Sad to see the organization will get pennies on the dollar when they could have had a king’s ransom 4-5 years ago.
The truth hurts. I will not apologize for speaking the truth.
Especially not to this bozo:
Sure, lets ignore the fact that Giroux was always, at best, a hockey team’s number two or three best player and has been brainwashed by a poorly run Flyers organization.
And please, don’t even get me started on Danny Briere.
Anyway: Auburn first half tonight -6.5 feels like a play. We ride.
