Eagles Update: Contract details of DE Derek Barnett revealed

After testing free agency, DE Derek Barnett re-signed with the Eagles on a two-year deal.
Details of the contract have been revealed, with Barnett’s deal being worth up to $14M:
On the #Eagles’ deal with Derek Barnett, it’s basically one year, $5.5 million if he plays every game ($1m in per-game roster bonuses tied to being active). In 2023, he’s due $8.5 million, though only $1.5 million is fully guaranteed as of now. https://t.co/azN8yvXDsD

While Barnett hasn’t been a bust per se, he has failed to live up to his first-round pedigree in Philadelphia.
In his five years with the Eagles, Barnett has 21.5 sacks to go along with 76 QB hits. He’s established a reputation in recent years as an undisciplined player, however, committing foolish penalties in critical situations:
Barnett’s 28 penalties since being drafted:
- 13 offside
- 6 unnecessary roughness
- 5 roughing the passer
- 3 neutral zone infraction
- 1 illegal use of hands
Albeit frustrating, Barnett is just 25 years of age and generates decent pressure against the quarterback — as evidenced by his 35 QB hurries last season. Unfortunately, Eagles fans have been watching Barnett make bonehead plays year after year.
If he was coming from another team, this signing would probably be an intriguing one.
