Saturday was the third consecutive night that the Phillies came out firing in the batter’s box early in the game. With the six runs tonight they have now outscored opponents 22-1 in the first 3 innings of the last 3 games.
JT Realmuto provided all the offense Kyle Gibson and the Phillies pitching staff would need with a 3-RBI double off Pirates starter Tyler Beede in the 1st inning. For the second consecutive night the Phillies loaded the bases in the opening frame and the second night they got a big hit.
Rhys Hoskins added an RBI single in the 2nd inning and Nick Castellanos added a solo home run in the 3rd inning, in what would be the last scoring of the night for either team.
Bryce Harper was 2-4 with 2 walks in his second start since returning from a stint on the 60-day IL. Harper ripped a single in the Phillies’ big 1st inning but slow-moving Rhys Hoskins was unable to score from second.
Gibson tossed 7 strong innings, allowing just 6 hits and striking out 9. Gibson gave up hits in 5 of the innings he pitched but only gave up one double in the 6th inning and held the Pirates to 0-6 with runners in scoring position. The 34-year-old has been trending in the right direction as the playoff race approaches, putting up a 2.41 ERA in his last 6 starts.
Sam Coonrod and Nick Nelson both contributed an inning of relief without giving up a hit. I dont think any of the pitchers were exceptional tonight, yet the Pirates hitters showed why they have the second lowest win pct in the National League. It’s actually kind of pathetic. And I thought the Reds were bad..
For the first time, this season the Phillies are 17 games over the .500 mark and they have their best record at this point of the season since 2011. The crowds are packed and Bryce Harper is back on the field.
The Phillies are going to win the World Series.
