WATCH: Phillies fans nearly rob Brandon Marsh of an incredible catch in left field

Brandon Marsh made a huge play in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s win over the Marlins, scaling the wall in foul territory to haul in a ball for a massive out with the tying run looming. It was a great catch but I want to give some credit where it’s rarely given, and that’s to the Phillies fans sitting right there who all things considered, did exactly the right thing.

Now, I’m not even sure if the Phillies fans meant to do it, or if it was just a piss-poor attempt to catch the ball themselves that happened to leave Brandon Marsh the space he needed but that’s beyond the point.

Watch the replay and you’ll see it. As Marsh climbed the wall and reached over, the fans in that section either got out of the way or made a wonderfully weak effort at going for it, and either way they left Marsh all the room he needed to make the grab.

Don’t think I missed the kid trying to catch this ball with a Chickies & Petes crab fries bucket either. Could you imagine? We had hats up in the air too. Again, I’m not going to make assumptions at this point, I’m just happy that Brandon Marsh made the catch.

That’s exactly how it’s supposed to work. Nobody stuck a hand out into the field of play, nobody tried to be the hero, nobody turned into the next infamous fan-interference villain. They just gave their guy the space to go make the play, intentionally or not.

That’s not always a given. We’ve all seen fans reach over the wall, snatch a ball out of a fielder’s glove, or flat-out cost their own team an out because they couldn’t help themselves. It happens somewhere every season, and it always turns into a whole thing.

Not last night in South Philly.

These Phillies fans, whether by design or by sheer lack of hand-eye coordination, read the situation perfectly, and their guy came away with the out.

Anyways, credit to the fans in left, regardless of intent. Whether it was genuine courtesy or just a beautifully halfhearted lunge that whiffed, the result was the same: Marsh got his catch, the Phillies got their out, and Bowlan wiggled out of the jam. Textbook fan behavior in a big spot, even if it was completely by accident.

Know when to reach and, more importantly, know when to back off, flail uselessly, and let the professional handle it. Well done, folks. Sort of.
