Phillies Claim Andrew Hoffmann Waivers D-Backs

Phillies claim Andrew Hoffmann off waives from the D-Backs, option him to triple-A Lehigh Valley

Quick one here, because this isn’t a big move, just some depth. The Phillies claimed right-hander Andrew Hoffmann off waivers from the Diamondbacks on Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. To clear a 40-man spot, they recalled Felix Reyes and placed him on the 60-day IL with a right wrist fracture.

Phillies claim RHP Andrew Hoffmann off waivers from the D-Backs

Andrew Hoffmann a 26-year-old depth arm. His big-league numbers this year are ugly, a 7.71 ERA in eight games with a WHIP over 2.00 in a small sample, but he did post a respectable 3.19 ERA in Triple-A last year, and at 26 there might still be something to develop.

He’s not going to make a real impact in the majors, but he’s cheap, controllable, and has big-league experience if the Phillies ever need to reach into the depth chart. Low cost, low risk, exactly the kind of guy you stash in Lehigh Valley just in case.

The bigger picture is that this is the second depth move in two days, coming right after the Nestor Cortes signing. Neither one is a blockbuster, but together they show a front office still working the margins to shore up the pitching staff even after the deadline.

Meanwhile, the actual story is the team itself.

The Phillies get a day off Thursday before opening a series with the Cardinals, and they enter it on a six-game winning streak, 12 games over .500, and playing their best baseball of the year.

St. Louis has been surprisingly good and is still in the Wild Card mix, so taking that series would create a little more breathing room. That’s what matters. The Hoffmann claim is just a minor footnote on a very good week.
