MLB Friday Night Best Bets
Toronto Blue Jays @ Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates, as Phillies fans saw last week, are a horrendous baseball team. Although the Blue Jays haven’t lived up to everybody’s expectations in 2022, they’re still a good team that is fighting to hold their third spot in the AL Wild Card race.
Alek Manoah takes the hill for the Blue Jays tonight, who has been fantastic this season for Toronto. Manoah holds a 12-7 record on the year with a 2.60 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. He holds the 8th best ERA in baseball, the 13th best WHIP, and is coming off an outing of seven innings, where he allowed just four hits and one earned run.
Johan Oviedo will get the ball tonight for Pittsburgh, who is making just this second start of the season. Oviedo has been a bullpen piece for the Pirates this season, holding a 3.20 ERA out of the pen with 26 Ks and a 1.30 WHIP in 25.1 innings. His only start of the season was back on June 4th, where he allowed 8 hits and three earned runs in five innings.
The Jays are coming off a series victory vs. the Cubs, and the Pirates have lost 7 out of their last 9.
Final Pick: Blue Jays -1.5 (-146)
Miami Marlins @ Atlanta Braves
The Atlanta Braves are a better baseball team than the Miami Marlins, and it isn’t particularly close. The Marlins are 3-7 in their last 10 and have a -78 run differential on the year. All signs are pointing to the Braves winning tonight’s game, even the odds…we’re going to do the exact opposite.
Sandy Alcantara, the upcoming NL Cy Young winner, has been arguably the bets pitcher in all of baseball this season. Alcantar has a 2.13 ERA on the year with a 12-6 record, a 0.98 WHIP, and has struck out 167 batters in that time. He’s 4-3 on the road this season with a 2.82 ERA and 73 Ks away from Miami.
Charlie Morton will work tonight for the Braves, who is 6-5 on the year with a 4.10 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. He’s 4-1 at home with a 3.07 ERA but is coming off a so-so month of August, where he allowed 11 earned runs and 22 hits in 30 innings.
The books like the Braves at home…I like the Marlins and Sandy Alcantara on the road.
Philadelphia Phillies @ San Francisco Giants
The Phillies start off the month of September on the west coast, taking on a 61-68 Giants team who has underperformed in 2022 after winning 106 games last season.
Kyle Gibson is coming off the best month of his career, tallying a 2.30 ERA in 31.1 innings. Gibson allowed 28 hits and just eight earned runs in that time while striking out just 30.
Alex Cobb holds a 2.86 home ERA this season, with a 3-6 record with 71 Ks. He’s totaled a 3.81 ERA on the year with a 1.30 WHIP.
The Phillies bats got hot in the last game vs. the Diamondbacks, and that’s not going to stop tonight.
