Phillies cough up 9th inning lead, lose series finale to Marlins 6-5

Rhys Hoskins committed a costly fielding error as the Phillies coughed up a 9th inning lead in a 6-5 loss to the Marlins on Thursday night.
Marlins (56-80) Beat Phillies (75-62)Â
- Winning Pitcher: Dylan Floro (1-2, 3.48)
- Losing Pitcher: David Robertson (4-3, 2.43)
- Save:
Well that’s a shit ending to a game that quickly got away from the Phillies..
David Robertson was tabbed for the save opportunity by manager Rob Thompson despite having thrown a high number of innings over the past two weeks. Roberston quickly gave up a lead off double off the left field wall to Garrett Cooper.
With the tying run in scoring position, Avon Grove native Joey Wendle – who had a solo home run off Kyle Gibson earlier in the game and generally killed the Phillies all series long – hit a grounder toward Rhys Hoskins at first base who was unable to get his glove on the ball allowing it to roll into shallow right field.
It was the defining moment of the game and was a poor play even for Hoskins, who isn’t exactly known as a wizard at first base. Robertson followed with a walk and then gave up an RBI single to Brian Anderson giving the Marlins the lead at 6-5. It all happened so quick and before you could look up, the Phillies had blown a lead and were now trailing.
Obviously, Robertson wasn’t sharp and gave up a couple hits and a walk. But this loss has to be squarely on the shoulders of Rhys Hoskins. He simply let the team down tonight, there is not getting around it.
The Phillies blew not only a lead, but also an opportunity to win a game in which they were facing NL Cy Young Award favorite Sandy Alcantara. Alcantara gave up 3 earned runs on 8 hits and was clearly missing the pinpoint control that led him to a sub 2 ERA before the All-Star break.
There’s good news on the horizon for the Phillies thin bullpen as Seranthony Dominguez successfully completed a rehab assignment at AAA-Lehigh Valley tonight, while Zach Eflin and Zack Wheeler are expected to throw later this week.
With the loss and two wins today by the Milwaukee Brewers, the Phillies hold a slim 2.5 game lead with 25 games remaining in the season.
Kyle Gibson gives up a solo shot to Lewin Diaz to give the Marlins the lead in the 3rd inning.
1-0 Marlins
Garrett Cooper rips a double off Kyle Gibson in the third to double the Marlins early lead.
2-0 Marlins
Nick Maton takes Alcantara deep in the 3rd inning for a solo shot to put the Phils on the board.
3-1 Marlins
Alec Bohm just misses a home run instead lining a fly ball off the left field fence. JT Realmuto would drive in the Phils second run with a sacrifice fly in the next at bat.
3-2 Marlins
Bryson Stott drops a seeing eye single to the opposite field foul line to tie the game up against Sandy Alcantara in the 4th inning.
3-3 Phils
Avon Grove High School and West Chester University star Joey Wendle takes Kyle Gibson deep for a solo home run to give the Marlins back the lead in the 5th.
4-3 Marlins
Danville, Pennsylvania native JJ Bleday gets a bit too casual while catching a fly ball of the bat of Kyle Schwarber. This would turn out to be a big error for the Marlins in the 5th inning.
Alec Bohm cashes in on JJ Bleday’s error with a 2-RBI double in the 5th inning to give the Phils the lead.
5-4 Phils
Rhys Hoskins makes a confounding error at first base allowing the tying run to score with nobody out in the 9th inning. Oh boy.
5-5 Phils
David Robertson coughs up the lead in the 9th inning with an RBI single to right field.
6-5 Marlins
