Brenden Aaronson is the latest USMNT player to get a cringeworthy Ted Lasso Billboard ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar

The Philadelphia Union posted a picture of the latest USMNT billboard, located in Medford New Jersey, the hometown of Brenden Aaronson.
Brenden Aaronson Ted Lasso Billboard
Have to be honest, I’m not into the Ted Lasso messages at all. He’s not even a real person. It’s a fake soccer coach on a comedy show that airs on Apple TV+.
I like the idea of putting up messages in the hometowns of players. That definitely works, even more so when we’re talking about someone as local as Brenden Aaronson.
Still, the whole Ted Lasso thing is pretty corny and reminds me of how people from outside of Philadelphia constantly reference Rocky, a fictional boxer and how the city itself doesn’t help stop that due to the fact his statue is still outside the Art Museum and is a main attraction of tourists.
Aaronson has one of the best nicknames in all of soccer. “The Medford Messi” is an elite nickname. Instead, the marketing campaign is about Ted Lasso and whatever nonsense he put on the billboard. I don’t know if they thought the messages were funny, inspirational, or what but literally no part of it makes me any more or less excited for the World Cup when it starts this weekend.
The billboards should feature a picture of the soccer player, maybe some stats, and have USMNT branding so people who might not typically watch soccer will know what the hell is going on. Literally no one outside of die hard soccer fans know anything about the USMNT. Market the players, not a fake soccer coach.
These billboards stink. Sorry (not really).

Maybe I’m being too harsh but I really don’t think so. The whole marketing is cringeworthy, which actually fits in with all of the other headlines surrounding the 2022 World Cup, thanks to the miserable host country of Qatar.
