Win or Go Home: USMNT faces Iran in a must-win knockout match at the 2022 World Cup
While the knockout games don’t officially start in the 2022 World Cup until next week, the USMNT will have their first “win or go home” match today against Iran at 2PM.
I’m not going to pretend that I’m a soccer expert by any means but I do know that if the USMNT fails to advance to the Round of 16 and draws or loses to Iran, it would be a MASSIVE failure for what has been deemed “The Golden Generation” of United States Soccer for the past decade.
Iran was embarrassed in their first World Cup match against England, when they lost 6-2. The Iranians did bounce back against Wales, winning 2-0, positioning themselves as the second team to advance out of Group B heading into today’s match.
They now only need to draw against the Americans to make it to the Round of 16.
Again, the only way that we advance to the knockout stage is by beating Iran. This is the World Cup and everything that our squad has worked for. It’s do or die. The USMNT either wins today or they’ll fly back to the states, which if you’ve been keeping up with the news out of Qatar, might not be the worst option but you get my point.
It’s not hard to know Iran’s strategy heading into today’s match. All they need to do is draw so they’ll likely hang back and crowd the box to do anything possible from letting the USMNT get a lead in the match.
The USMNT played well over the last two matches. I know they were both draws and everyone who doesn’t appreciate the game of soccer finds it hard to believe that’s the case but it’s just a fact.
Play your best players today. Get Brenden Aaronson in the mix early with Pulisic and Timmy Weah up front and let’s apply as much pressure as possible. Get the lead and that should free up some space along Iran’s defensive front.
Wow, did I just break down USMNT soccer strategy? Damn right I did. Does it make sense? Who fucking knows.
There’s no possible way the US can lose or draw this match, even more so after the nonsense that took place yesterday in the US Press Conference with these Iranian state-affiliated media members wagging their fingers in our faces.
Prediction: USMNT 2-0.
