Former Giants GM Dave Gettleman with the ultimate cold take while attending the 2020 Senior Bowl

Former Giants GM Dave Gettleman was caught on a hot mic while attending the 2020 Senior Bowl, which now looks like the ultimate Freezing Cold Take.
Dave Gettleman Hot Mic, Cold Take
In case you did not hear that clearly, former Giants’ General Manager, Dave Gettleman proclaimed,
“Listen, for a million reasons, Daniel was the right guy.”
Hysterically enough, he reassures himself that his top ten pick in the 2019 draft is the right guy as Jalen Hurts completes a crosser right in front of him at the 2020 Senior Bowl.
Gettleman had been working with Giants as Director of Player Personnel since 1999, but traded that in for the General Manager’s hat in 2018.
As Eli Manning neared the end of his career, Gettleman pounced at the opportunity to take a quarterback with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 draft. He landed on Duke University’s Daniel Jones, an Eli Manning lite in terms of personality and playstyle.
In that draft, Heisman winner Kyler Murray was the clear-cut number-one pick out of Oklahoma. Outside of him, guys like Dwayne Haskins, Drew Lock, and Daniel Jones were gaining buzz as the draft neared. But overall it turned out to be a very weak quarterback class.
The following year, Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert, and most importantly, Jalen Hurts went to the league. All are currently head and shoulders above Daniel Jones in terms of a franchise quarterback.
The Giants held the fourth overall pick in that draft, but god bless him; Gettleman stuck to his guns and drafted a dominant left tackle to complement the quarterback whose play would determine his career.
And you heard while he was watching all of those other quarterbacks during the draft process. In Gettleman’s mind, his evaluation of some of the top gunslingers in the league cemented that Daniel Jones was the saving grace for their franchise.

Dave Gettleman conveniently retired two years later as New York wiped its entire coaching staff and front office. Giants’ owner, John Mara, later said that “We’ve done everything possible to screw this kid up since he’s been here.” Good eye, Gettleman. Good eye.
