Eagles promote QB coach Brian Johnson to offensive coordinator

After numerous reports indicating the Eagles desire to promote QB coach Brian Johnson to be the team’s new offensive coordinator, it was made official today.
Per Adam Schefter, the Eagles have officially promoted Brian Johnson to be their new OC after losing Shane Steichen to a head coaching position with Indianapolis this offseason.
The Eagles have a new OC in town
This move has been expected for weeks now. The Eagles didn’t bring in any outside coaches to interview for the position. All signs were pointing towards Johnson.
If the Eagles had not lost Steichen and promoted Johnson, they probably would have lost their QB coach to an OC job elsewhere. There was reportedly a lot of buzz surrounding Johnson heading into this coaching cycle, mostly due to Jalen Hurts’ ascension into an elite quarterback in 2022.
Johnson will assume play calling duties as the team’s new OC. There was some speculation that Nick Sirianni would go back to calling plays after losing Steichen, but it appears he’s going to give the 36-year-old Johnson a crack at it.
Aside from Johnson being one of the up and coming offensive minds in the sport, his relationship with Hurts is likely what sold the Eagles on this hire. He and Hurts go back decades, where Johnson played under Hurts’ father in high school.
While this is Johnson’s first OC job in the NFL, he has plenty of OC experience on his resume. He was the offensive coordinator at Mississippi State when Dak Prescott quarterbacked there. He also got great results out of Florida QB Kyle Trask as the OC in 2020.
