Legal Tampering: All-Pro CB returns to Eagles on three-year deal

The Eagles have seen several defensive starters find new homes during the NFL’s legal tampering period, but they won’t be losing their All-Pro corner.

Per multiple reports, CB James Bradberry has agreed to return to the Eagles on a three-year contract worth $38M, with $20M guaranteed.

Bradberry reportedly got offered more money to play elsewhere but elected to stay and be a part of Sean Desai’s new defense.

“It means a lot, truly, to be back in Philadelphia,” Bradberry told The Philadelphia Inquirer. “Especially having the season we just had. It feels good to come back and keep trying to compete for the ultimate goal which is the Super Bowl.”

After being unceremoniously cut by the Giants last offseason, Bradberry signed a one-year deal in Philly and posted a career year en route to earning second-team All-Pro honors:

  • 51.6 passer rating allowed
  • 45.3% comp. allowed
  • 17 passes defended
  • 3 INTs

Bradberry and Darius Slay formed one of the league’s best cornerback tandems, contributing to the No. 1 overall pass defense that allowed just 179.8 passing yards per game.

Despite his impressive performance, Bradberry’s 2022 campaign came to a bitter end after his infamous holding call on JuJu Smith-Schuster sealed Super Bowl LVII for Kansas City. I’m willing to bet that play left a sour taste in Bradberry’s mouth, and he re-signed to finish what the Eagles started last season.

In terms of AAV, this was a home-run signing for the Eagles, as Bradberry was expected to sign for well above $12.6M/year. While Slay’s future with the team remains uncertain, Bradberry will undoubtedly help lock down one side of the field regardless of who’s across from him in 2023.

  1. Great news that James Bradberry will be returning to the Eagles on a reasonable deal. I enjoyed reading about his impressive performance last season and his desire to compete for the Super Bowl. My question is: how do you think Bradberry’s return will impact the Eagles defense and their overall chances next season?
