Preview: Phillies return to Citizens Bank Park, open up a 3-game set with the Detroit Tigers

The Philadelphia Phillies kick off a six-game homestand tonight with a matchup against the Detroit Tigers at 6:40 EST.
Starting Pitchers
- Joey Wentz (1-5, 7.28 ERA)
- Aaron Nola (4-4, 4.70 ERA)
The Phillies had a positive ending to a pretty brutal road trip on Saturday and Sunday, putting up 15 runs on the Washington Nationals to take the final two games and secure a series win.
Sunday’s matinee was an absolute bloodbath in favor of the Phillies, as Kyle Schwarber and Drew Ellis both crushed two homers to elevate the Phillies to an 11-3 win.
The month of May wasn’t an easy month for the Fightins, but it seems like the offense is starting to turn things around. They’ve logged 42 total hits in their first four games in June and combined for 22 runs against the Nationals over three games.
The Phils now return back to Citizens Bank Park, which is something they desperately needed. They’re 14-10 at home this season, compared to a whopping 13-22 on the road.
The Detroit Tigers come to town after getting swept by an abysmal Chicago White Sox team over the weekend. Detroit is 26-31 on the year with a 12-18 away record and a -64 total run differential on the year.
The Tigers have just two players in their lineup with an OPS over .800, Riley Greene and Zach McKinstry, and Greene is out of tonight’s lineup. Javier Baez continues to struggle in Detroit, while Miguel Cabrera is hitting 7th with a .202 average and 0 homers on the year.
Matt Vierling and Nick Maton make their return to CBP tonight and will receive their NL Championship rings ahead of tonight’s first pitch. Vierling is currently on the IL with back discomfort, but Nick Maton will hit 5th and play third base tonight for Detroit.
Phillies Starting Lineup
Joey Wentz vs. Aaron Nola
Joey Wentz has been brutal for Detroit this season, holding an 8.47 ERA on the road with a 1-3 record and just 13 Ks. Wentz has allowed 15 earned runs over his last four starts, but the team has ultimately won four of the last six games he’s pitched.
Aaron Nola looks to bounce back after two rough starts on the Phils’ road trip, allowing a combined 12 hits and nine earned runs to the Mets and Braves. Nola has thrown well at home this year, holding a 2-1 record with a 3.86 ERA and 25 Ks in four starts. He’s 4-4 on the year with a 4.70 ERA.
