Eagles Buzz: Vic Fangio probably would’ve become Philadelphia’s defensive coordinator if the Jonathan Gannon tampering situation didn’t occur

Former Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon is one of the most hated men in the city right now, and for good reason.
His lackluster game plan and inability to make in-game adjustments played a huge role in the Eagles’ Super Bowl 57 loss. Gannon subsequently left the DC gig behind to take on the head coaching job out in Arizona, which has been marred in the tampering controversy that we still don’t have clear answers on.
The Eagles organization was clearly mad about how everything went down with Gannon and Arizona. Not only because Gannon straight up lied about the whole thing, there’s a good possibility they could have had one of the best defensive minds in the business if Gannon was transparent about his intentions.
Vic Fangio – now the DC down in Miami – was a defensive assistant on the Eagles coaching staff during their latest playoff run, signing a two-week contract to help with game prep leading up to the Super Bowl. When speaking with reporters at Dolphins minicamp, Fangio said he, “can neither confirm nor deny,” that he would’ve become the Eagles DC if it weren’t for the Gannon tampering situation.

Pretty easy to read between the lines on this one.
The timeline of events is a bit murky, but all you need to know is that the Eagles probably would have just kept Fangio around if they knew Gannon was going to leave. The team thought Gannon was staying up until just moments after the Super Bowl loss.
Fangio signed with the Dolphins to become their defensive coordinator on February 15, three days after the Super Bowl and just one day after Gannon was announced as the head coach in Arizona.
Getting Fangio would have been a huge hire for the Eagles, but there’s no sense in playing the ‘What if?’ game here. Sean Desai still brings a lot of potential to the role and I’m excited to see how he pans out.
