Eagles LB group nearly placed dead last in PFF’s latest power rankings

Of all the position groups on the Eagles roster, linebacker is easily the worst.
Second-year backer Nakobe Dean brings a lot of potential to the table and he’ll have ample opportunity to prove himself this upcoming year. Outside of him, there isn’t a whole lot to write home about here.
In Pro Football Focus’ latest positional power rankings, they took a crack at ranking every LB unit in the NFL. Unsurprisingly, the Eagles LB group ranked near the bottom of the league. What is a little surprising, however, is the fact that they nearly came in dead last, placing 31st.
PFF’s reasoning on the Eagles LB corps ranking so low:
It will be hard to judge the Eagles’ linebackers until we see them in action. Last year’s starters, T.J. Edwards and Kyzir White, left in free agency and left the Eagles with a huge hole in the middle of their defense. Nicholas Morrow enters the fold as the only player with significant experience, but he’s graded above 54.0 in just one of his five seasons in the NFL.
Former third-round pick Nakobe Dean looks to establish himself as the new leader of Philadelphia’s defense. There are concerns about his small stature and health in a full-time role, but the Eagles won’t know what they have until he plays. Dean put up first-round production in college, so he’ll aim to prove the doubters wrong while playing alongside several former Bulldog teammates.

Losing both starting linebackers from last year (TJ Edwards and Kyzir White) was always going to be difficult to replace. Howie Roseman, as he typically does, didn’t address the LB position in a meaningful way this offseason.
Signing Nicholas Morrow helps a little. He led the Chicago Bears in tackles last year and started all 17 games. Nevertheless, he posted a 54.0 defensive grade last season, along with a 46.8 run defense grade. Not great.
With training camp inching closer, expect Howie to add another LB within the next month or so. I’d be shocked if he rolled into the 2023 campaign with the linebacker position as-is.
