New York Yankees’ pitcher Domingo Germán makes history, becomes the 24th pitcher in Major League Baseball to throw a perfect game

Last night, the 24th perfect game in Major League Baseball history was thrown at the Oakland Coliseum by New York Yankees pitcher Domingo Germán.
Germán pounded the zone with 72 strikes on 99 pitches. He struck out nine batters, got eight groundouts and ten fly outs. The New York Yankees beat the Oakland Athletics 11-0.

Germán was the first pitcher since the 2012 season to reach perfection. He is the fourth Yankees pitcher to find perfection, joining Don Larsen (World Series), David Wells and David Cone.
June 28, 2023: Domingo Germán Perfect Game
Over 140 years of Major League Baseball and over 235,500 games played, there have been 24 official perfect games. No pitcher has ever thrown more than one.
During baseball’s modern era, 22 pitchers have thrown perfect games, seven of which have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
- Cy Young
- Addie Joss
- Jim Bunning
- Sandy Koufax
- Catfish Hunter (tight name)
- Randy Johnson
- Roy Halladay (shoutout Phillies)
Last night Germán retried 27 straight Oakland A’s batters. He recorded 9 strikeouts on 99 pitches. What makes it even more crazy, is that Germán was basically fighting to keep his job in the Yankees’ starting rotation after allowing 15 runs in just 5.1 innings pitched over his last two starts.
Looking at 24 perfect games in baseball, the fact that THREE happened in 2012 is incredible.
- April 21, 2012: Philip Humber (Chicago White Sox)
- June 13, 2012: Matt Cain (San Francisco Giants)
- August 15, 2012: Félix Hernández (Seattle Mariners)

For the Philadelphia Phillies, Jim Bunning threw the first perfect game in franchise history on June 21, 1964 against the New York Mets. Bunning tossed 90 pitches while striking out 10 Mets’ batters and the Phillies won 6-0 at Shea Stadium in the first game of a doubleheader.
On May 29, 2010, Roy Halladay threw the second perfect game in Phillies’ franchise history against the Florida Marlins at Sun Life Stadium.
Halladay threw 115 pitches while striking out 11. The Phillies won the game 1-0.
