WATCH: Luis Medina makes the most embarrassing play of the 2023 MLB season, fails to record out on routine infield grounder

Luis Medina was on the mound for the Oakland Athletics last night and in the bottom of the second inning, made one of the most boneheaded plays of the 2023 MLB season.

Washington Nationals had Ildemaro Vargas at the plate and with an 0-2 count, he hit a ball back up the middle which was snagged by Medina.

Medina took his sweet time trotting over to first base with the baseball, assuming that Vargas had “given up” on the play but that was not the case.

Instead of running over to tag the base to secure the out or throwing the ball to first baseman Tyler Soderstrom, Medina was out-hustled by Vargas, who was safe on the play and granted an infield single.

I mean…that simply cannot happen.

I don’t care how terrible the A’s are this season or the fact that their roster is stacked with Triple A players in order to make the reasoning behind shipping the team to Las Vegas hurt a little less for Oakland fans.

You definitely cannot allow a runner beat you to the bag on a routine ground out. It’s not like the Nationals have much to play for either.

Real embarrassing for Luis Medina and the A’s. Great hustle by Ildemaro Vargas.

The Nationals scored a run in the 8th and 9th inning to beat the A’s 3-2.
