Chicago Cubs broadcast team were not happy with Ronald Acuna Jr celebration after making baseball history last night
Ronald Acuna Jr reached another milestone last night as the Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago Cubs for the second straight game, winning 6-5 in extra innings.
The Braves took down the Chicago Cubs 6-5 in extra innings last night thanks to a single by Ozzie Albies that drove in Acuna. Earlier in the inning, Acuna stole second to get into scoring position.
As much as I hate admitting it, stolen base was a pretty impressive milestone from Acuna as it marked the 70th bag swipe on the season.
Ronald Acuna Jr became the first player in MLB HISTORY to steal 70 bases while hitting 40 home runs. Before Acuna, there have only been four other players in history to reach the 40/40 club. A-Rod previously held the highest stolen base total among the four other members at 46 back in 1998.
Do the math. Acuna is now the only member of the 40/50, 40/60, 40/70 Club. Again, pretty freaking impressive as much as it pains me given the fact that he’s a member of the Atlanta Braves.
So of course, Acuna successfully stole base number 70 on the season and the game was paused for moment so the milestone could be acknowledged.
Needless to say, the broadcast crew for the Chicago Cubs were none-to-pleased with the theatrics.

“We’re really stopping the game to do a highlight montage?”

Honestly, I’m usually on the side of the broadcast, even more so when it’s dealing with the Atlanta Braves but I have to disagree on this one.
The 40/70 club is awesome and should be immediately acknowledged.
I understand that the Cubs are currently standing on the edge of a cliff trying to keep pace in the NL Wild Card and have now lost 2-straight games to the Atlanta Braves but I really you can’t just overlook what Acuna has accomplished this season.
If you don’t want it to happen, then throw him out.
That’s exactly what JT Realmuto would have done.
Suck it up and win the damn baseball game.
It’s crunch time in Chicago and if they get swept by the Atlanta Braves this late in the season, they’re in trouble. Period.
Cubs are just nervous their late-season collapse will keep them out of October

Meanwhile, the Phillies have already clinched the No. 1 spot in the NL Wild Card and are awaiting to see what bottom-feeder NL team they’ll face in the first round of the postseason, which begins next Tuesday. Right now, it looks like that will be the D-Backs, as the Cubs and Fish fight it out for the third and final ticket to the playoffs.
