Eagles bolster their defensive coaching staff with former Seahawks DC

The Philadelphia Eagles have been busy at work bolstering their coaching staff over the past several days. Over the weekend, they finalized their two new coordinators in Vic Fangio and Kellen Moore. Now, they’re focusing on the position coaches.

According to several sources, the Eagles are bringing in former Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt as their new defensive line coach, along with Seahawks senior defensive consultant Karl Scott in an undisclosed role.

As Seattle’s DC, Hurtt wasn’t great. Seahawks fans seem pretty happy to see him leave, after his unit finished 30th in total yards allowed in 2023. Nevertheless, he has a pretty solid track record as a defensive assistant. He overlapped with Fangio in Chicago, where he was the Bears defensive line coach from 2015-16.

Along with Hurtt, the Eagles also brought in Karl Scott, who’s primarily worked with defensive backs throughout his coaching career. He spent time under Nick Saban at Alabama from 2018-20 and helped mentor the Seahawks young defensive backs from 2022 through this past season as the team’s defensive passing game coordinator. During his time in Seattle, the Seahawks sent four defensive backs to the Pro Bowl – two rookies in Tariq Woolen (2022) and Devon Witherspoon (2023), and two veterans in Quandre Diggs and Julian Love.

Scott’s role with the team is still unknown, but all signs are pointing towards him taking over for DK McDonald as the defensive backs coach.

By the looks of it, this Eagles coaching staff is going to be completely different in 2024. With two new coordinators in place, it makes sense. Regardless, I’m not sure how I feel about a complete overhaul. It’s a huge risk/reward play for Philly.

Best case, all of these guys come in and install their systems flawlessly and the Eagles hit the ground running next season. Worst case, we get a year like we just had. Where, by the end of it, not a single player looked like they knew what they were doing.

I hope it’s the former, but mentally, I’m preparing for it to be the latter.
