Poverty Franchise: Chip Kelly has emerged as potential candidate for Commanders’ OC job
The Washington Commanders reportedly have interest in former Eagles HC Chip Kelly for their vacant offensive coordinator position, after making the most underwhelming HC hire of this cycle in Dan Quinn.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Kelly is a potential OC candidate for Quinn’s new-look Commanders.

Chip Kelly has been a popular name for vacant OC positions in the NFL this offseason. Per CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, Kelly was mentioned by multiple head coaching candidates during this hiring cycle when getting interviewed. Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk also noted that Kelly is linked to the Raiders OC opening.
Chip hasn’t been on an NFL sideline since 2016, when he led the San Francisco 49ers to a 2-14 record. Before that, as you’ll probably recall, he spent almost three years as the Eagles head coach, getting progressively worse with each passing year.
He really hasn’t been a relevant offensive coach since his Oregon days, where he led the Ducks to a 46-7 record during his tenure. His fast paced offense was solved pretty quickly in the NFL and once he got figured out, Kelly had no counter punch. Since then, he really hasn’t had much notable success anywhere he’s been.
Chip Kelly also doesn’t really strike me as an offensive coordinator. He’s been a head coach for essentially a decade straight now. And it was well documented in Philly how much of a control freak he was, enforcing a sleep monitoring program for players, moving off players who didn’t agree with him, and of course, pushing Howie Roseman out of his position as GM for a year so he could have full control over personnel. Those were wild times.
But as we know, where there’s smoke, there’s typically fire. It’ll be interesting to see if Chip actually gets another shot in the big leagues, and it’ll also be hilarious if it happens with Washington’s poverty franchise.
