Eagles Buzz: Former Heisman favorite garners interest as potential long-term backup QB for Jalen Hurts

As the 2024 Senior Bowl practices come to a close, Eagles fans were met with some interesting speculation circulating the social media timelines Thursday afternoon.

According to a handful of random Eagles accounts on Twitter who may or may not be making all of this up, the team has shown some real interest in South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler down in Mobile, Alabama. And apparently, the Eagles scouts met with the QB sometime this week.

At one point, Rattler was viewed as a no doubt first-round pick and potential Heisman winner. Entering the 2021 season as Oklahoma’s QB1, he was the odds on favorite to take home the award. However, during a matchup against Texas early in the season, Rattler was benched for projected No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams, and Williams never looked back.

Rattler spent his final two collegiate seasons at South Carolina, where he racked up 6,212 passing yards and 38 total touchdowns, while also accounting for 20 interceptions.

Realistically, I wouldn’t draft this guy, and I don’t think Howie Roseman would either. The Eagles already have a developmental backup in place with Tanner McKee and have so many holes to address on the defense that I don’t even want them to draft any offensive players.
