Eagles L'Jarius Sneed

Eagles listed as top landing spot for standout free agent corner

Heading into this offseason, upgrading the cornerback position will be on of the Eagles top priorities.

Although the team re-signed James Bradberry last offseason to a three-year extension, he was so bad in 2023 that the team will more than likely pull the plug and eat the dead cap hit. That leaves us with a 33-year old Darius Slay, a frequently injured Avonte Maddox, and a bunch of unproven first/second year players.

Looking ahead to free agency, the Eagles could (and probably should) take a swing at Chiefs free-agent-to-be corner, L’Jarius Sneed. Per Spotrac, Sneed is projected to sign a four-year, $65 million contract this offseason. And he’s made it clear that he wants to get paid, either by Kansas City or someone else.

ESPN’s NFL insider Matt Bowen predicts that the Eagles will be the team to swoop in and grant Sneed his money.

Bowen on why the Eagles will sign Sneed:

“Upgrading the cornerback position is an offseason priority in Philadelphia. With Sneed, the Eagles land one of the top veteran free agents, who has the coverage skills and ability to produce in Vic Fangio’s system.”

This would obviously be a huge signing for Philadelphia. They desperately need secondary help and not only is Sneed coming off the best year of his career, he’s only 26 years old and can be a building block for the Eagles new-look Vic Fangio defense.

Over his four year career, Sneed has accounted for 10 interceptions, while allowing a 65% completion percentage and 79.5 passer rating when targeted. Prior to 2023, Sneed was primarily a slot corner before shifting to full-time outside corner this past season. Sneed didn’t miss a step, recording two interceptions and surrendering zero touchdowns in coverage. He also held opposing quarterbacks to a 51.9% completion percentage and 55.9 passer rating on 81 targets.

He’s going to be expensive, there’s no doubt about that. Nevertheless, the Eagles’ brass has shown the willingness to pay top-tier corners when they need to. Sneed certainly fits that bill.
