Eagles draft USC wideout Makai Lemon at 20th overall, officially signaling the end of the AJ Brown era
It really shouldn’t shock me that the Eagles took wideout Makai Lemon in the first-round of the NFL Draft. Yet, I’m still surprised.
After trading up to 20th overall, the Eagles snagged their eventual AJ Brown replacement. If/when AJ is gone, I feel a lot better about the position now, I’ll say that much. Because this guy is a DOG.
Eagles got a demon at 20th overall
The Eagles taking Makai Lemon at No. 20 overall is not the big-bodied outside receiver pick some people may have expected, but it makes plenty of sense. Lemon is a tough, compact slot receiver who wins with strong hands, route feel, and yards after the catch. He is not just a gadget guy. He works the middle of the field, catches away from his frame, breaks tackles, and does the dirty work that keeps drives alive.
That matters in this offense. The Eagles already have star power on the outside, but Lemon gives them a different kind of weapon. He can be a chain mover, a quick-game option, and a run-after-catch threat who turns easy completions into chunk plays. His scouting report points to some limits against long, physical press corners, and he is not an elite vertical burner. That is fine. That is not why you take him.
You take Makai Lemon because he gives the Eagles a reliable, competitive receiver who can help right away. A Biletnikoff winner with strong hands and Amon-Ra St. Brown-style traits in the middle of the first round? Yeah, that will play.
