Maddox, 27, was an efficient nickel back when available but has missed 29 games over the last four years. Schefter states that both sides remain open to a possible reunion.
Philadelphia drafted Maddox in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL draft out of Pittsburgh. Maddox carried a cap hit of $9.6M in 2024; the Eagles will save $2M by releasing him. In 64 games played, Maddox recorded 250 combined tackles, 31 passes defensed, eight forced fumbles and four INTs.
The Eagles have several options to potentially replace Maddox moving forward. They signed Isaiah Rodgers last August, who will likely be reinstated this year after serving a suspension for betting on NFL games in 2022.
Zech McPhearson was slated to be Maddox’s primary backup but suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in the preseason. Eli Ricks and James Bradberry (who is still on the team) both took snaps there last season, albeit while playing out of position.
Following the release, the Eagles have roughly $44M in open cap space.
