At this time, the Eagles are taking calls on both Sweat and Haason Reddick, who was granted permission to seek a trade a few weeks back. I can’t imagine both will be gone this offseason, but with reports suggesting the team will heavily pursue edge rusher Bryce Huff in free agency, anything seems to be on the table.
The team also officially agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Brandon Graham on Saturday, solidify some much needed depth at the position.
Although Sweat’s sack numbers took a minor dip in 2023, his pass rushing efficiency was still top notch. He recorded career-highs in QB hits (16) and total pressures (68) this past season.
A Josh Sweat trade doesn’t necessarily mean the team doesn’t view him as a double-digit sack guy – it more so speaks to his fit within Vic Fangio’s scheme. Fangio needs edge rushers who can get after the passer (obviously), but he also needs them to drop back into coverage quite a bit. Sweat isn’t built for that type of scheme by any means. He’s a shoot up the field and wreak havoc type of pass rusher.
Given Sweat’s age and production over his first six NFL seasons, the Eagles should be able to fetch a first-round pick for him in a trade. That’ll more than likely be the asking price. And if Howie Roseman can swing that, I’d feel pretty good about it.
