Social Media had a field day with Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons after they drafted Michael Penix Jr with the No. 8 overall pick in the NFL Draft
Last night, the Atlanta Falcons shocked everyone watching Thursday’s first round of the 2024 NFL Draft by selecting Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr with the No. 8 overall pick.
The pick was surprising because Atlanta made one of the biggest offseason moves in signing ex-Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins to a 4-year contract $180 million contract.

On top of that, there were reports during the Lamar Jackson trade speculation that the Atlanta Falcons were NOT interested in trading for him. The Falcons then shifted focus, signed Kirk Cousins to a massive contract only to follow that up by drafting Michael Penix Jr. No. 8 overall.
Talk about a wild timeline.
Kirk Cousins $180 Million Contract
Honestly, I didn’t think it was that surprising of a move given the fact that Cousins is coming off a torn Achilles’ tendon and is now 35 years old. The Falcons clearly want a backup plan in place, which is why they drafted Penix in the Top 10 last night.
At the same time, it’s still pretty hilarious and according to reports Kirk Cousins wasn’t happy with the decision to draft a quarterback at No. 8 overall. Why? I’m not too sure.
I guess Cousins just loves football so much but at the same time – he’s 35 years old and just cashed a $100+ million check from the Falcons. Maybe just shut up and enjoy your ride off into the sunset and let Michael Penix Jr. enjoy draft night and embrace the fact that he was just selected in the Top 10.
We know all too well here in Philadelphia that when you have a backup quarterback that was drafted high and a struggling starter, the drama and calls for a change under center are inevitable.
Thankfully for the Falcons, the Denver Broncos followed up their shocking pick with one of their own by selecting Oregon quarterback Bo Nix at No. 12 overall – which is definitely the worst pick of the NFL Draft so far, outside of the Atlanta Falcons selecting Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick.
