Houston Cougars defy NFL cease-and-desist over new blue alternate uniforms
Last year, the NFL served the University of Houston Cougars a cease-and-desist letter demanding that they do not institute their new alternate blue uniforms for the upcoming seasons. The league claimed the jerseys were “blatant” copies of the Houston Oilers jerseys, a franchise that no longer actually exists.
Houston Cougars AD said, “This isn’t a reach. This is a layup. We’ve got a very defensible position”:
The University of Houston is moving forward with plans to introduce a new alternate blue uniform for its teams despite legal threats from the NFL.

Pretty ironic for the NFL to be mad about the city the Houston Oilers abandoned using colors that actually mean something to the city. Hell, they don’t even let the Houston Texans use the Oiler throwbacks because the Titans own the rights to it since they’re technically the same organization.
Needless to say, this is a massive middle finger to the NFL from Houston, and I’m all for it. Sure, the comparisons are pretty close, but it’s a different shade of blue. Plus, they represent a city instead of the interest of a billionaire.
Also, they’ll be used across the entire athletic program, so it’s not just the football team chasing some cheap clout. Fans love the colorway and feel a connection to it, and that’s quite literally what college sports are all about.
