Victor Wembanyama defies basketball logic, wins 2023-24 NBA Rookie of the Year by securing all 99 first-place votes
San Antonio Spurs Victor Wembanyama has officially been crowned the 2023-24 Rookie of the Year – pulling off a clean sweep in securing all 99 first-place votes to win the award unanimously.
Victor Wembanyama wins 2023-24 NBA Rookie of the Year
In an interview with San Antonio Express-News, Wembanyama told reporter Jeff McDonald what he plans to do with the Rookie of the Year trophy.
Wembanyama is going to keep it in the back of his closet, hidden from sight so the award won’t be celebrated or recognized.
“I want it to be overshadowed by what I do in the future,” Wembanyama was quoted of saying about his award. “I don’t want it to push me in the slightest to slow down.”
Whatever works, right? Wembanyama defied all basketball logic this season. Standing at 7-foot-4 and just 20 years old, the Spurs superstar averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and a league-leading 3.6 blocks per game while playing in in 71 out of 82 regular games.
Victor Wembanyama is now the FIRST player in NBA HISTORY to reach 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocks and 100 3-pointers made in a season.
Obviously, Rookie of the Year was a given for Victor Wembanyama and with those numbers, I think it’s the right choice to win the NBA Defensive Player of the Year too.
Note: The only thing preventing that from happening would be the fact that here in Philadelphia, Joel Embiid gave the young Wemby an effortless 70-Burger back in January.
