Steve Cohen walks back deleted MLB Trade Deadline tweet, expects the New York Mets to make the playoffs this season

Yesterday, Mets owner Steve Cohen posted and promptly deleted a message on Twitter that appeared to suggest that his baseball team would be major sellers at the MLB Trade Deadline.

Honestly, that post didn’t come as a shock given the fact that the Mets are a bad baseball team and most recently, have lost three straight to the Phillies while posting a lowly 3-7 record over their last 10 games.

The Mets are 19-23, 11 games behind the first place Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East Standings. They are eight games behind the second-place Atlanta Braves and a game behind the third-place Washington Nationals.

In typical “LOL METS” fashion, they currently have the highest payroll in Major League Baseball at roughly $308 million. That was also the case last year when they finished 75-87 on the season while unloading a bag full of several major “pieces” at the deadline, including Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander.

The fact that Steve Cohen wants to walk-back what he posted and deleted on Twitter is arguably worse than telling SNY that he expects the Mets to make the playoffs and he was “baffled” by the way people took his post on social media.

“I believe in this team,” Cohen told Andy Martino of SNY. “I believe in the back of the baseball card. It’s way too early to speculate on anything. It’s May 16. I expect to make the playoffs. I know the fan base is frustrated, but it’s still early. We’re still very capable of making the playoffs. I fully expect to make the playoffs.”

Christ almighty, Steve. You expect the Mets to make the playoffs? Look, I understand it’s the middle of May but I’m pretty sure everyone is on the same page in saying that the New York Mets are lightyears away from being considered a playoff team.

Maybe Steve Cohen should just stick to your guns and sell at the deadline so he can save whatever dignity is left inside his baseball organization.
