WATCH: Sixers honor ‘The Franchise’ Tyrese Maxey in video that potentially revealed the return of the Iverson Era Black Jerseys

On Sunday, the Philadelphia 76ers released a video honoring Tyrese Maxey after his five-year max extension became official earlier in the day.

Maxey managed to hold off for a year in order to give the 76ers as much cap space as possible this Summer so the organization could maximize their free agent haul, turned out to be a fantastic gesture as the team landed Paul George, Caleb Martin, Andre Drummond, and Eric Gordon while drafting Jared McCain and retaining Kelly Oubre Jr.

After the max extension became official on Sunday, the Philadelphia 76ers dropped a video featuring Tyrese and a “Maxey Museum” honoring their rising star.

Tyrese Maxey: “The Franchise”

I’m sure I’ll be criticized for bringing this up but…I’m really not sure the point of the video in the first place?

No disrespect to Tyrese Maxey, of course he deserves a ton of praise for what he’s brought to the organization but for the life of me, I couldn’t stop thinking about the reasoning to go to such lengths to showcase him like this at this point of his career.

Could it be the result of a Philadelphia 76ers front office completely neglecting their players (Joel Embiid) up until Maxey that this came off as an attempt to reel fans back in?

Maybe.

Regardless, it worked and as long as Joel Embiid was in the mix showing his support while Maxey himself acknowledged that he was there to help The Process bring home a championship, no harm, no foul I guess…

Tyrese Maxey speaking directly to Joel Embiid

“Big fella… You were the first person to really believe in me… Just walking onto the plane, you telling me to sit there, you bringing me a PlayStation… That meant the world to me… I hope I’m not going to let you down.”

Anyways, there were a few moments that had social media speculating as to whether or not the Philadelphia 76ers plan on bringing back their iconic Black Jerseys after Maxey received one of his own at the ceremony.

The closest we’ve gotten to black jerseys was Ben Simmons’ “Boathouse Row” edition uniforms back in 2020-21 – which also happened to be the 20th Anniversary of Allen Iverson carrying his 2000-01 squad to the NBA Finals.

There has been quite the revitalization of the Philadelphia 76ers over the past few weeks. While there’s nothing official, the black jerseys definitely caught the attention of every Sixers fan on social media and will almost certainly generate buzz until the team makes an announcement.

I do hope that if/when they do bring back the iconic 76ers jerseys from the Iverson Era, they also consider bringing back the one true mascot of the Sixers. Hip Hop needs to make a comeback in some capacity.

Imagine Opening Night at the Wells Fargo Center where the 76ers hold a “Blackout” game and wear the throwback jerseys. Hip Hop takes the court as the Bell Ringer, Gold Medalist Joel Embiid is announced with Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George is officially introduced as a member of the team. It’s a literal movie.

While there is nothing official here, teasing the fans by flashing these pictures around and not coming through would be crazy. It appears there’s a good chance we get to see what Sixers fans have been waiting for. Stay tuned.
