Ready-to-Drink Cocktails will be sold at bars and grocery stores soon, a look at the history of Pennsylvania being a Liquor Control State

Big news from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as ready-to-drink cocktails have officially been approved to be sold outside of government-controlled stores by Governor Josh Shapiro.

Don’t get me wrong. I love the Keystone State but I think we can all get behind the fact that when the only way you’re able to exercise your god given right as an American to drink liquor (ready-to-drink cocktails) is to purchase it through a government-owned store, changes need to be made. 

I know a ton of people immediately turn to the Quakers and our guy Billy Penn, but that’s not reason behind the laws. Instead, I ask you to point your (middle) fingers directly at  Gifford Pinchot – the Pennsylvania governor responsible for establishing PA as a Liquor Controlled State back in 1933. 

Pinchot is responsible for the absolute dog shit liquor laws in the state of Pennsylvania. 

In late 1933, after national Prohibition had been abolished by repeal of the 18th Amendment, Pinchot called the legislature into special session to establish rigid controls designed to discourage the purchase of alcoholic beverages by making it as inconvenient and as expensive as possible. That was the genesis of the Liquor Control Board and the State Stores. [Source]

Dare I say that Pinchot was an enemy of the state that infringed on our constitutional rights to party (within reason) in any way we as Americans see fit? 

I do dare, actually. 

Pinchot hated liquor and wanted the state of Pennsylvania to remain a dry state like a total dork. Thankfully, we have Governor Shapiro now, who just recently passed a bill that will allow “canned liquor drinks” – also known as Two Robbers, High Noons, Vodka White Claws, etc. to be sold from bars and grocery stores. 

Previously, only wine and beer could be sold in stores like Wawa and Wegmans. 

Great update for sure. Shoutout Governor Shapiro. The license plates and new state signage ahead of America’s 250th birthday is also a nice touch.

Ready-to-Drink Cocktails Coming Soon…

Getting your favorite mixed drinks is now easier than ever after Governor Josh Shapiro signed legislature allowing more stores to get a special ready-to-drink cocktail permit.

Senate Bill 688 allows locations in Pennsylvania that are already licensed to sell alcohol, like bars and select grocery stores, to apply for a ready-to-drink cocktail permit.

The State Senate approved the bill 32 to 17 before sending it to Governor Shapiro’s desk.

According to the bill sponsored by Senator Mike Regan, 12,000 restaurants, bars, beer distributors, grocery stores, and convenience stores can apply for the new permit. The law restricts the sale of canned cocktails to before 11 p.m., and they must have an alcohol content of below 12.5% – [Source]

The Ready-to-Drink Cocktails Law will go into effect 60 days after it’s officially signed – lining up perfectly for football season and MLB postseason as a primer before all eyes turn to Philadelphia to celebrate the country’s 250th Birthday in 2026. 

The next thing we need to do is get rid of the 192 oz rule in grocery stores. I was at Wegmans the other day and this woman behind the counter, who clearly couldn’t count as trying to tell me I passed the 192-mark and I definitely did not. On top of that, walking in and out of a store just to grab more alcohol is a complete waste of time. 

Get rid of it and any other laws that infringe on our god given right to party in USA and purchase ready-to-drink cocktails at any and all locations.
