NFL Rumors: Haason Reddick’s potential return to the Eagles

In the latest episode of “Flight Deck with Rich Cimini,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini dropped a nugget regarding New York Jets’ edge rusher Haason Reddick. Currently holding out for a new contract, Reddick reportedly ‘wouldn’t mind’ a trade back to the Philadelphia Eagles.

“Let’s put it this way: a little birdie told me that Reddick, I don’t think, would be opposed to something like that,” Cimini said. “I think Reddick is so frustrated with the Jets’ situation — and of course, he did request a trade in August — so frustrated that he wouldn’t mind going back to Philadelphia.”

While hurdles remain, Cimini stressed that this is a developing story to watch as the season progresses.

Reddick’s Frustration and Holdout

Reddick has already forfeited over $8 million this season due to fines while holding out after his April trade from the Eagles. Following his trade request in early August, Jets GM Joe Douglas clarified his intentions: “We will not trade him. He is expected to be here with his teammates, and he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report.”

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport highlighted Reddick’s desire to adjust his current deal, which features a non-guaranteed base salary of $14.25M for the 2024 season.

Yet, as Cimini noted, the Jets aren’t negotiating with a player absent from the team since training camp, putting Reddick in a precarious position.

Huff’s Limited Impact

To fill the void left by Reddick, the Eagles signed Bryce Huff to a hefty three-year, $51.1 million contract after his impressive 10-sack season with the Jets in 2023. However, Huff has struggled to make an impact in Philadelphia, averaging just 25 snaps per game and logging only one tackle over three starts.

Despite this rocky start, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio reassured fans that Huff is expected to step into a starting role soon. However, Cimini questioned Huff’s fit within the Eagles’ defensive scheme.

“He’s not a good fit in that Eagles system,” Cimini said about Huff. “And clearly, Vic Fangio, their defensive coordinator, has not embraced Huff. And so that’s on the Eagles. They’ve screwed up that signing. They’ve taken a good player, and they’re misusing him.”

The Trade Proposal

With these dynamics in play, Cimini laid out an intriguing trade scenario: the Eagles sending Bryce Huff to the Jets in exchange for Reddick, especially since no Philly edge-rushers have recorded a sack yet this year.

Should the Jets be open to such a trade, Philadelphia would face the crucial task of negotiating a contract extension with Reddick—a process that hasn’t been straightforward for New York.

GM Howie Roseman was reluctant to pay Reddick big money before — I doubt he’s willing to do so now unless the asking price has dropped dramatically.
