Lieutenant Dan Joseph Malinowski

‘Lieutenant Dan’, Joseph Malinowski will remain on his boat in the Tampa Bay as Hurricane Milton approaches Florida’s gulf coast

Hurricane Milton, a Category 4 storm, is widely considered to be incredibly dangerous as it approaches Florida’s Golf Coast and is expected to make landfall this evening, bringing sustained winds near 160 mph and storm surges up to 12 feet.

A hurricane of that magnitude has Florida residents fleeing the state for a safe haven but one man by the name of Lieutenant Dan vows to brave the storm on his boat in the Tampa Bay.

Lieutenant Dan, Joseph Malinowski went viral on TikTok after a series of videos were posted on the social media platform. the sea captain having a face-off with what appears to be Tampa PD Chief Lee Bercaw. The officer tries to get Dan to leave the area for his own safety, telling him they’ll come back tomorrow to evacuate him forcibly.

Even while the National Hurricane Center warns of catastrophic flooding, Lieutenant Dan isn’t going anywhere. He responded to police saying “See you tomorrow” and continues to stand his ground, making it clear that he’s not going to abandon ship.

That of course, has made him an internet sensation with people rallying around him, though it’s a nail-biter to watch it all unfold.

Hell, you can even place bets on whether or not Lieutenant Dan lives or dies during the storm. I’m not usually a betting man, but +194 seems like pretty good value to me.

Whether you think he’s a stubborn hero or someone tempting fate, you have to admit, Lieutenant Dan is now the lone-soldier taking on Hurricane Milton.

Lieutenant Dan is officially a legend. He’s out there living by his motto—“don’t do stupid shit”—but here we are, with Dan refusing to evacuate in the middle of a storm, and the entire internet rallying behind him.

The fact that a GoFundMe has already hit $20,000 and climbing, plus a crypto coin that’s pushing $500,000 in market cap? You seriously can’t make this stuff up.

But let’s be real here. This is a guy who clearly isn’t leaving. He referenced Noah’s Ark and all the animals surviving while everyone else on land died which honestly, is a point I never really considered but he’s got a point.

Granted, Noah’s Ark was pretty much the size of a Carnival cruise ship, while he’s on the boat equivalent of the Barbie Jeep my sister had when he was three. I wouldn’t exactly call that a 1-to-1 comparison, but I understand the spirit of the comment and respect both the heart and gumption he brings to this endeavor.

He’s already gone viral, with people practically rooting for him to defy the odds, but as much as we’re all entertained by the story and I’m with you in hoping Lieutenant Dan makes it through safely, this isn’t just some wild meme—there’s real danger, and even Tampa’s Mayor has been blunt: if you stay, you’re probably going die.

I’ll be honest, I find this whole endeavor equally inspiring as it is completely stupid. As a result, I’m currently in talks with Honorable Chairman of The Liberty Line Drew Smith to get me on a one-way flight to Tampa to launch a new Storm Chasers segment on the website.

Only time will tell if I can secure the funding. We’ve established cost is really the only barrier since nobody at the website really cares if I live or die, and if the Phillies lose to the Mets in the NLDS I really won’t either.

At this point, the whole thing has become bigger than Dan. It’s like a modern-day folk tale unfolding in real time, and everyone’s hanging on every update, hoping for a heartwarming ending.

Whether he’s braving the storm for the thrill or just doubling down because of his new internet fame, one thing’s for sure: Lieutenant Dan has captured the imagination of everyone watching. Let’s just hope his next update comes from dry land.
