Flyers Update: Jett Luchanko returns to OHL; Cam York out at least 2 weeks

Saturday morning was a busy one on the news front for the Flyers as the organization updated the status of two key players in the organization.

Jett Luchanko is headed back to the OHL

In a move that was almost guaranteed after Luchanko watched the last two games from the press box, the 2024 13th overall draft pick is officially headed back to Guelph Storm of the OHL.

In his only four games, Luchanko did not tally a point, and had a +/- of -3. It is not a great look on paper, but the stats don’t tell the whole story.

The 18 year-old looked really good in the small sample size we got to see from him. He made mistakes that you would expect the youngest player in the NHL to make. Aside from that small handful of mistakes, he looked poised, strong, and showed he had the ability to keep up with some of the games biggest names.

Luchanko will now have the chance to develop some more down in the OHL, and maybe represent Team Canada in the World Juniors tournament.

Don’t get me wrong, I would have much rather seen Jett play the full year in Philly for many reasons – Going back to juniors won’t be the worst thing in the world.

Now, Jett will have the opportunity to play top-line minutes, and really get to focus on his shot. Not to mention that I am sure getting the chance to represent Team Canada at World Juniors would be a great development opportunity for him as well.

He will have the opportunity to return to the Flyers this season in the likley event his team does not make the OHL playoffs.

Flyers also announced Cam York is expected to miss at least 2 weeks

Late in Wednesday’s game against the Capitals, Flyers defenseman Cam York took a hit along the boards, seemingly suffering an injury.

The team officially announced today that York is out at least two weeks with that upper-body injury, which frankly could not be any worse timing for the Flyers.

Not only does that mean Flyers fans are going to have to watch Erik Johnson for an extended period of time, but now one of the teams promising young stars – one of the little bright spots of this season – is now out.

York was finally putting both the offensive and defensive sides of his game together, and he was starting to look like the future 1D they Flyers hoped he would be.

The tank is now officially on

All I got from this morning is that the tank is officially on.

Sending Jett down is a clear indication the Flyers have no intention of being remotely competitive. They are essentially just saving his rookie status (and also year one of his ELC) for next season.

I mean seriously, he did look like a top-6 forward when he was playing, so if they wanted to win now he would still be up.

As for York, I am sure this situation is non-tank related, but due to the circumstances it’s time to just embrace the tank.

Let York get fully healthy before returning him to the lineup, there is no need to rush him.

Erik Johnson may not be the answer and replacement Flyers fans are looking for, but when in the suck, you just have to embrace it right?

All together, it is starting to sound like the recipe for James Hagens on Broad Street.
