Jacksonville Jaguars could be without their top 3 wide receivers on Sunday against the Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles might catch a break in Week 9 when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars at Lincoln Financial Field in South Philadelphia on Sunday.
The Jacksonville Jaguars’ wide receiver room is depleted, with injuries potentially sidelining their top playmakers. Here’s the latest on Brian Thomas Jr., Christian Kirk, Gabe Davis, and other updates as we get closer to game day.
Brian Thomas Jr., the Jags’ top rookie receiver, has been a standout this season, leading the team with 33 catches for 573 yards (17.4 yards per catch) and five touchdowns. He’s currently dealing with a chest/rib injury suffered last week.
According to NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the initial timetable had Thomas Jr. missing 2-4 weeks. However, there’s a sliver of hope that he might be able to suit up against the Eagles.
Even if he plays, he’s likely not going to be 100%, which could significantly limit his effectiveness. If Thomas Jr. is out, Jacksonville will be without one of its biggest offensive weapons, leaving a serious gap for a team that’s already struggled to consistently move the chains.
Wednesday’s injury report will be crucial for updates on his status.
Meanwhile, Christian Kirk suffered a broken collarbone in Week 8, and he’s officially out for the season. It’s a significant blow to the Jags, as Kirk has been their second option in the passing game, with 27 catches on 47 targets and a touchdown. The loss of Kirk will certainly put more pressure on the rest of the receiving corps to step up.
Gabe Davis exited the Jags’ Week 8 loss with a shoulder injury, and it’s still uncertain whether he’ll be available on Sunday. Davis, a free-agent pickup, hasn’t been quite as impactful as expected, totaling 18 catches for 217 yards (12.7 average) and two touchdowns. His absence or limited availability only adds to Jacksonville’s receiving woes.
If Thomas Jr., Kirk, and Davis are all sidelined, the Jacksonville Jaguars will obviously be looking very slim at the wide receiver position.
Parker Washington (6 catches for 67 yards) and Tim Jones (1 catch for 10 yards) are the next in line. Beyond that, the practice squad offers little help, with Joshua Cephus, Elijah Cooks, Louis Rees-Zammit, and Austin Trammell combining for just nine career receptions and 80 receiving yards.
For a Jags offense that’s been inconsistent even when healthy, the lack of receiving depth could be a major problem. Facing an Eagles defense that’s eager to bounce back after some recent struggles, this could be a tough matchup.
More Injuries for the Jacksonville Jaguars:
It’s not just the receiver room that’s banged up for Jacksonville. Both starting guards—Brandon Scherff and Ezra Cleveland—had to leave Week 8’s game early, which could spell trouble for protection up front.
The secondary also took a hit, with Ronald Darby and Andre Cisco getting dinged up.
Running back Travis Etienne, who’s missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, could potentially return this weekend. If he’s back in action, he’ll be a critical part of Jacksonville’s game plan, especially given the lack of healthy receivers.
The Eagles’ defense should be licking its chops at the prospect of facing this depleted Jags offense. With Jacksonville potentially missing its top three wideouts and dealing with key injuries on the line and in the secondary, Philadelphia’s defense has a prime opportunity to capitalize.
Meanwhile, the Jags will need to get creative if they want to generate any offense against an Eagles team that’s coming off a dominant showing in Cincinnati.
