Caitlin Clark details Iowa’s Unique Halloween Tradition—You Won’t Believe How They Trick-or-Treat!
With Halloween just around the corner, I couldn’t resist diving into this one as TheLibertyLine’s resident Caitlin Clark super fan! Caitlin had me fully entertained with her stories about trick-or-treating back in her hometown in Iowa, where she grew up with the unique Beggars’ Night tradition. And, honestly, who wouldn’t be intrigued? It’s classic Caitlin—mixing her down-to-earth charm with some hometown fun, and I’m here for it!
At her latest press conference, Caitlin Clark’s stellar play took a backseat to something even more legendary in central Iowa—Beggars’ Night! For those unfamiliar, Beggars’ Night is Iowa’s unique twist on Halloween, where kids have to earn their treats by telling a joke.
Clark, always the jokester herself, revealed that she keeps things light with her teammates by throwing out laughs whenever she can. And with years of Beggars’ Night joke-telling experience under her belt, she’s never short on funny material!

Over 80 years ago, central Iowa established a unique Halloween tradition aimed at reducing crime by sending kids door-to-door a day early. It was a clever way to keep things safe while ensuring everyone had fun!
However, some towns like Bondurant, Marshalltown, and Windsor Heights have recently decided to break from tradition and now hold their trick-or-treating on the last Saturday of October. But don’t think that means kids can skip the jokes! There are still plenty of parents, including Caitlin Clark’s mom, Anne, who expect a good laugh before handing out those coveted treats.
“My mom to this day will still write all the jokes down … and send them to me and my brother and we get a kick out of them,” Clark said. “So that is where I get most of my jokes.”
In true Clark fashion, Beggars’ Night wasn’t all fun and games. It of course was a competition that she took extremely serious.
“I was too worried about getting the full-size candy bars and being the first to knock on the door,” Clark said. “I know that’s super surprising, but I was in a full sweat at trick-or-treat. I came home, I had to go straight to the shower before I counted my candy because that’s all that matters, that I got first.
“And I got first every year. The amount of candy I had, I was the first at the door, I had the best costume, I had the best joke. I dominated trick-or-treat.”
