Jared McCain drops career-high 27 points, carries 76ers to OT win against the Charlotte Hornets
The Sixers did it—barely. After blowing a 16-point lead, they managed to hang on in overtime to pull off a 107-105 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday, thanks to rookie Jared McCain’s breakout performance.
McCain dropped a career-high 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting, coming through repeatedly when his team needed it most. It was a win that showed heart, hustle, and, well, the need for a bit of cleanup down the stretch.
Jared McCain: A Rookie on a Mission
Tell you what, I will personally start my own TikTok and replicate any dance that Jared McCain does if the rookie is going to drop 20+ points a night and play like a complete psychopath when the 76ers’ need him the most.
McCain came up big last night against the Hornets, pouring in 27 points and knocking down critical buckets in crunch time. Eleven of those points came in the fourth quarter as the Sixers fought to keep a grip on the game.

Not to be outdone, Guerschon Yabusele had another solid outing off the bench, racking up 20 points and eight rebounds. Yabusele even logged the bulk of the center minutes, taking over for Andre Drummond in the second half, and he made his case as a game-changer for the Sixers’ offense.
A Shaky Start and the Jeff Dowtin Jr. Effect
Things didn’t look great at the start. Both teams struggled to find any offensive rhythm, with the Sixers clinging to a narrow 16-15 lead after the first quarter.
The Sixers forced 10 turnovers from Charlotte in the first quarter alone, with their defense carrying them through a rough shooting stretch. In a surprise move, Sixers coach Nick Nurse brought in Jeff Dowtin Jr. and Eric Gordon, both of whom hadn’t played much recently.
Dowtin, in particular, made an immediate impact, hitting his first shot, defending well, and playing with surprising confidence.

Three-Point Struggles and Kyle Lowry’s Impact
The Sixers had a rough go from deep in the first half, going just 1-for-14 from beyond the arc. Despite the ice-cold shooting, they managed to keep it close, thanks to scrappy plays around the rim and three straight layups from Kelly Oubre Jr. to end the half with a 46-45 lead.
Yabusele and Jared McCain Show Up Big
Nurse shook things up to start the third by subbing in Yabusele at center. Yabusele’s ability to space the floor opened up the offense, and he brought energy on both ends.
Yabu and McCain nailed a couple of threes to keep the Sixers ahead, with McCain’s buzzer-beater three at the end of the third putting them up by 10. McCain’s confidence continued to shine in the fourth quarter, pushing the Sixers’ lead to 14 at one point.
Hornets Storm Back, But Jared McCain Stays Cool
Charlotte wasn’t done, though. LaMelo Ball caught fire, and suddenly the Sixers were scrambling to keep up. With Paul George struggling from deep, it was up to McCain to keep the Sixers in the game. He hit a clutch pull-up and then a go-ahead three off a skip pass from Kyle Lowry.
Caleb Martin added a three-pointer to put the Sixers up by five, but the game wasn’t over yet. Lowry missed a free throw in the final seconds, giving Ball a chance to tie it with a cold-blooded corner three, sending the game to OT.
Overtime Chaos and the Sixers Escape
With George sitting out the extra period, Nurse leaned on Yabusele and Drummond in the frontcourt, and they delivered just enough to keep the Sixers afloat. Yabusele scored a key bucket, and McCain came through with a driving layup. The defense held up in the clutch, forcing a shot-clock violation and keeping Ball in check on critical possessions.
Of course, nothing comes easy for these Sixers. Yabusele missed two free throws in the final seconds, but Martin snagged a crucial offensive rebound to help seal the win. It wasn’t pretty, but in a season where wins haven’t come easy, this one felt especially sweet.
