LaMelo Ball fined $100K after saying “no homo” in postgame interview
LaMelo Ball got slapped with a $100,000 fine from the NBA for saying what most people would consider a throwaway line after Saturday night’s nail-biter win over the Milwaukee Bucks.
Reporter Shannon Spake asked LaMelo Ball about the team’s defense against Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo on the last play of the game. Ball answered by saying the Hornets “loaded up” and quickly dropped a “no homo” before finishing his answer.
LaMelo Ball: “No Homo” Comment Gets Him A $100K Fine From The NBA
The NBA didn’t like it, obviously, but let’s be real here—was anyone actually offended by this? Or is the NBA just trying to flex its authority and stay “on message” at the expense of LaMelo Ball?
Ball shouldn’t have said it (I guess) but come on—$100,000? That’s the maximum fine the league can hand out, and for what? A phrase that, like it or not, gets thrown around casually all the time without anyone batting an eye.
It’s not like Ball was out there spouting hate speech or making an intentional dig. The dude was caught up in the moment, answering a question about Giannis, and said something dumb.
Happens every day.
Even Ball’s apology felt like it was more about cleaning up the PR mess than any real harm being done. “I didn’t mean anything by it,” he said after Sunday’s loss to Cleveland. “I’ve got love for everybody, and I don’t discriminate.” Ball’s coach, Charles Lee, backed him up, calling the incident uncharacteristic and saying Ball is “a joy to have around.”
That tracks. LaMelo isn’t some villain here; he’s just a young guy who said something dumb. Newsflash: it happens.
I honestly would have fined him for using the phrase that has been beaten to death over and over again. LaMelo is much more creative than that – going back to a “no homo” line that jumped the shark what, a decade ago? Oof.
I also think we should implement a rule that if you pay a $100,000 fine for saying “no homo” then you shouldn’t have to also publicly apologize.
That just seems redundant at that point, right? Plus, no one even gave a shit to begin with and now LaMelo is paying $100K AND apologizing? Gonna be a no from me, dawg.
The NBA is so focused on looking progressive that it’s lost touch with the way people actually talk. “No homo” isn’t some malicious slur; it’s a clumsy, outdated phrase that most people laugh off. Context matters, and in this case, it’s clear Ball wasn’t trying to offend anyone. But the league treats it like a capital offense, and now he’s $100K poorer because of it.
Seriously though, I know it’s 2024 and everyone is focused on being “inclusive” but it’s not crazy to question how ridiculous this fine is from Adam Silver and his NBA Deep State cronies.
By issuing a fine for LaMelo Ball, the NBA actually made this more of a story than it would have ever been if everyone just kept moving forward. We’re talking about a postgame interview after a Milwaukee Bucks (4-9) and Charlotte Hornets (5-8) game. Literally no one cares.
The NBA’s heavy-handed response feels less like accountability and more like performative outrage. Are we really supposed to believe this fine is about protecting anyone?
Or is it just another way for the league to polish its image and pretend it’s solving problems that don’t really exist? Meanwhile, actual issues—like inconsistent refereeing or tanking teams—get swept under the rug because they don’t come with easy soundbites or flashy headlines.
At the end of the day, this whole thing is a nothingburger that’s been blown way out of proportion. LaMelo Ball apologized and paid a shit ton of money for the mistake.
How about the NBA takes a long look in the mirror and ask if this is the hill it really wants to die on? Because from here, it looks like a league that’s more worried about its PR than about understanding context or fostering actual growth.
What happened to the game and league I once loved, man? Give me a break.
