Cringeworthy: The Get Up’s awkward exchange on Cooper DeJean, saying he earned an ‘apostrophe’ in his name after hit on Derrick Henry

Leave it to old, outdated, cable news networks to lack self-awareness, ya know? The latest example comes from the retirement home over at the Get Up as they discussed Eagles’ cornerback Cooper DeJean’s hit on Ravens’ running back Derrick Henry.

Foxworth: “Cooper DeJean is playing cornerback, a position that people like Cooper DeJean rarely play. People who like to have apostrophes in their name. And Cooper is playing like a guy who deserves to earn the apostrophe.”

Jeff Saturday: “Not a lot of Coopers in the defensive backfield.”

Oof. What a horrible exchange. Foxworth should just come out and say what literally everyone on the internet, along with DeJean and his teammates are already saying, ya know?

Before we state the obvious, let’s be very clear that there is no apostrophe in Cooper DeJean’s name. No one in the NFL is playing to “earn an apostrophe” in their name. “Not a lot of Coopers in the defensive backfield” was a stupid way to try to support the already-stupid Domonique Foxworth. 

Breaking News: Cooper is white. He plays cornerback/safety for the Philadelphia Eagles. It’s rare to see a white dude play that position in today’s NFL. He locks down opposing team’s number one wide receivers anywhere on the field. He’s dominant…and you know what? Screw it. Listen to CJ Gardner-Johnson. I’m done trying to explain what everyone already knows.

Whatever you do make sure that the Get Up hosts and Domonique Foxworth specifically doesn’t watch DeJean’s basketball mixtape. He wouldn’t even know what to say after witnessing a “white boy” from Iowa dunking on people.

If I didn’t like fun and cool things on the internet, I would be quick to point out that if this exchanged was reversed, we (white people) wouldn’t hear the end of lectures about how race has zero relation to anything with the topic.

Thankfully, I do like fun and “White Boy Winter” is in full effect, so I’ll let Foxworth and the rest of the Get Up dorks off easy with this one and chalk (pun intended) it up to the fact that they are boring, old, and not-funny broadcast hosts trying to be relevant with the general narrative on Cooper DeJean, Reed Blankenship, and the rest of our boys playing in NFL secondaries.

Rest easy knowing that a cultural shift of not taking shit like this so seriously is happening across the internet while the national media and cable television networks are still struggling to keep up with the times.
