Kevin Durant rips the the new NBA All-Star Game format and as usual, he makes a great point
Kevin Durant slammed Adam Silver and the NBA for their latest “great” idea in changing the format for the All-Star game and as usual, he made a great point.
While viewership continues to struggle, Adam Silver and the NBA front offices continue to implement new things that simply do not work. Don’t get me wrong, I think we’re all in agreement that the All-Star game has been absolutely brutal to watch for the better part of the last decade.
The lack of competitiveness has been glaring and if you really look the product the NBA has been giving it’s viewers, that same lack of competitiveness has now bled over into the regular season schedule.
So yeah, I can definitely understand the panic from Adam Silver and the NBA Front Office to find something new in order to “save” All-Star Weekend however the new format is definitely up for debate and Kevin Durant is right for questioning it.
The league announced their new plans on Tuesday to implement a new format for the All-Star game in San Francisco. Instead of our traditional East vs West game, we will be seeing a mini-tournament featuring four teams consisting of eight players competing in a bracket. 24 NBA All-Stars will be selected and divided into three teams and then an additional team featuring the winner of the Rising Stars Challenge will take the place of the 4th team.
Each game in this tournament will be decided by the first team to reach 40 points or more.
Side Note: I can’t help but wonder where that number even came from? lol

Kevin Durant didn’t hold back when reacting to the new format for 2025, calling the setup downright “terrible”.
I asked Kevin Durant what he thought about the new format for the NBA All-Star Game: “I hate it. Absolutely hate it. Terrible….We should just go back to East-West.” pic.twitter.com/T7owR5aJY7

“I hate it,” said Durant, per Suns writer Gerald Bourguet. “Absolutely hate it. It’s terrible. All-Star Game formats changing … are terrible in my opinion. We should just go back to East-West and just play the game.
“I think we’ve been trying to bring that flair back somehow with All-Star Weekend,” Durant added. “But [I think] we should just keep it traditional. We’ll see how this one works. You never know, I might be wrong. I’m just another guy with an opinion. But we’ll see how it works.”
Obviously, Kevin Durant isn’t just some keyboard warrior throwing shade at the league. The man is a walking bucket, multiple-time All-Star, and about as smooth a player can get when it comes to strapping ’em up. And if he is giving this All-Star “evolution” the eye roll, maybe it is time the league office tapped the brakes.
Again, it’s not like the All-Star Game hasn’t been on life support already. Sure, we’ve had moments of brilliance like 2020 game with the Elam Ending- it was pure magic. But lately, the event has turned into a glorified layup line where nobody even pretends to play defense.
Fans want effort, competition, and a reason to care about this midseason spectacle. Instead, we’re getting an untimed bracket where a group of 19-year-olds could suddenly find themselves guarding Kevin Durant.
Exciting. Maybe for the memes…I guess.
Whether the league decides to listen to KD or doubles down on their awful marks on making “innovations” it remains to be seen, but one thing Is clear- the NBA All-Star game might turn out to be an even bigger flop than the NBA Cup.
