Howie SZN: Miami Dolphins are waiving Shaq Barrett, can sign with any team if he clears waivers on Friday
The Miami Dolphins plan to release former Pro Bowl pass rusher Shaq Barrett on Thursday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Barrett will be eligible to play for another team this season if he clears waivers on Friday.

Shaq Barrett’s Career Snapshot:
- Age: 32
- Teams: Broncos (2015-2019), Buccaneers (2019-2023), Dolphins (2024)
- Career Games Played: 131
- Total Sacks: 59.0
- Solo Tackles: 289
- Assist Tackles: 111
- Fumble Recoveries: 5
- Interceptions: 3
- Pro Bowls: 2
- Super Bowls Won: 2
Barrett, who last took the field for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2023 season, joined the Dolphins as a free agent back in March. However, after a brief stint, he announced his retirement in July. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told Schefter that Barrett is currently in top shape and ready to make an immediate impact for any team that picks him up.
Starting his NFL career as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos, Barrett helped secure a Super Bowl 50 win. He later moved to the Buccaneers, where he not only led the NFL with a staggering 19.5 sacks in 2019 but also clinched another Super Bowl title in 2020.
HOWIE! PLEASE BRING ME SHAQ BARRETT
The Miami Dolphins are waiving him from their reserve/retired list, and if he goes unclaimed on waivers, he will become a free agent eligible to sign with any team, including the Eagles, for the remainder of the 2024 season.
However, if another team claims him off waivers, he would be ineligible to play for the rest of this season, which would be the biggest buzzkill ever.
Shaq Barrett can sign with the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday if he clears waivers but if he’s still in the same mindset as he was back in August, then he might only consider playing for two teams not named the Eagles: The Denver Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
August 2024: Shaq Barrett saying he would only come out of retirement for the Bucs or Broncos, and it has nothing to do with winning a Super Bowl

Blah, blah, blah. I would literally lie through my teeth to get Kay Adams to like me so I’m not taking anything that Barrett said back in the summer to heart. One conversation with Howie Roseman and things should change rather quickly.
Barrett has a proven track record and could be a perfect addition for the Eagles’ defense that’s looking to bolster their pass rush for a deep playoff push. If he clears waivers, it’s likely we’ll see teams scrambling to sign him, given his potential to reshape the playoff landscape. Here’s to hoping that Howie Roseman is the first on the call. It’s the biggest “no-brainer” ever.
