Was the Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis trade an inside job? A closer look at a blockbuster NBA trade months in the making
Now that the initial shockwave of the Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis blockbuster has settled (no, it wasn’t a fever dream), we’re moving into the “wait, what the hell actually happened?” phase.
As with any massive NBA trade, the key details start trickling out after the fact, helping us make sense of the why, how, and what now? behind the deal.
So let’s break it down.
The Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis Trade was Months in the Making…
According to reports, talks began about a month ago—right around the time Luka Doncic suffered his injury on Christmas Day.
Now, that’s an interesting wrinkle, right?
- Did the injury accelerate the Mavs’ timeline?
- Would this trade have even happened if Dallas was sitting comfortably as a top-four seed?
While Luka cleared his medicals, we still don’t know how much concern there was internally about his long-term durability. If there was real doubt about his future, it makes sense that Dallas wanted out before committing to a supermax contract.
Official Reason: Luka Was Too Out of Shape, Didn’t Defend, and Mavs Didn’t Want to Pay Him
The initial reporting suggested that the Mavs were frustrated with Luka’s conditioning and defensive effort, which—while valid—feels wildly insufficient as a reason to trade a 25-year-old generational talent.
Then Nico Harrison dropped the real reason:
“We really feel like we got ahead of what was going to be a tumultuous summer, him being eligible for the supermax and also a year away from him being able to opt out of any contract.”
Translation:
- If they didn’t offer him the supermax this summer, Luka could have forced his way out next season.
- If they did offer it, they weren’t convinced he’d actually be worth it.
- Either way, they were heading for a messy breakup, so they ripped the Band-Aid off now.
The contract situation explains why Dallas had to move fast—but it still doesn’t explain why they left so much potential value on the table.
Why Didn’t Dallas Get More?
And this is where the trade completely unravels from a logic standpoint.
1. The Mavs KNEW Luka had insane value. So why not shop him?
Harrison literally admitted teams had been preparing for years to sign Luka Doncic if he ever became available.
So why only call the Lakers?
- Why not call San Antonio? Luka + Wemby would be unfair, and the Spurs have endless assets.
- Why not call OKC? The Thunder could send you 10 first-round picks and barely feel it.
- Why not even leak that Luka was available and start a bidding war?
Instead, they went straight to Rob Pelinka, who happens to be tight with Nico Harrison, and essentially handed him a franchise-altering gift.
2. The Lakers Paid Almost Nothing
Look at what the Lakers actually gave up for Luka:
- Anthony Davis
- One first-round pick
That’s it.
Again, if word got out that Luka Doncic was on the market, would the Lakers have pulled their offer? Hell no. Yet, Dallas made no other calls, took no other offers, and let Pelinka waltz away with a 25-year-old perennial MVP candidate for pennies on the dollar.
So Why Only the Lakers?
The only logical explanation is personal relationships.
- Nico Harrison and Rob Pelinka go way back.
- This has the same “buddy deal” energy that we saw when Danny Ainge handed Kevin Garnett to the Celtics.
There’s a term in real estate called a “pocket listing”—where a property is sold privately to a preferred buyer before it ever hits the open market.
This feels exactly like that. Pelinka got first dibs on Luka before any other GM could even get involved. And Dallas took the first offer instead of shopping their best asset.
The Mavs Trashed Luka on the Way Out—Why?
One of the strangest parts of all this is how quickly Dallas went from Luka is our franchise cornerstone to Luka Doncic is a fat, lazy defensive liability that we had to get rid of.
That’s… weird.
It’s extremely rare to see a team trash their own player on the way out, especially one that just led them to the NBA Finals.
- Did something happen behind the scenes?
- Did Luka demand out privately, and the Mavs just played it off as their choice?
- Is there a medical red flag we don’t know about?
Whatever the case, the smear campaign feels way too aggressive for a team that claimed they wanted to keep Luka Doncic long-term.
What We Know for Sure
1️⃣ The Mavs didn’t want to commit to Luka long-term
2️⃣ Talks started right around his injury
3️⃣ They wanted to shore up their defense with AD
4️⃣ They had to move him before the offseason to maximize leverage
5️⃣ Pelinka and Harrison’s relationship played a role in getting this done
This Feels Like an Inside Job
At some point, we’re going to learn more about what actually happened behind the scenes.
Because as of now?
- The timing is weird
- The lack of league-wide bidding is baffling
- The return package is laughably small
- And the Mavs’ sudden pivot on Luka is bizarre
One thing is for sure: If Luka gets in shape and dominates in L.A., Dallas will never live this down. If Anthony Davis’ injury history catches up with him? The Mavs front office will have just committed one of the most egregious self-owns in NBA history.
